Tsutomu Yamaguchi holds the incredibly dark historical distinction of officially surviving both atomic bombings in Japan during World War II, basically making him the unluckiest lucky man alive. The young engineer was on a business trip in Hiroshima when the first bomb dropped, leaving him with severe radiation burns, temporary blindness, and ruptured eardrums, but miraculously alive. Desperate to find safety, he bandaged himself up, boarded a train, and traveled back to his hometown, which unfortunately happened to be the city of Nagasaki. He was literally sitting in his office trying to explain the sheer horror of the Hiroshima explosion to his deeply skeptical boss when the second nuclear bomb detonated directly over them, destroying the building yet again. Despite essentially being a magnet for the most destructive weapons ever created by human hands, Yamaguchi miraculously survived the second blast and ultimately lived to the ripe old age of ninety-three, proving that sometimes the universe just cannot take you out!
