Before Dr. Seuss, there was a terrifying war cartoon

Long before he was teaching children about green eggs and ham, Dr. Seuss was drawing wildly xenophobic and terrifying military propaganda. Deployed to the animation division of the US Army, Geisel crafted 'Ann D.N.O. Mosquito', a grotesque, blood-thirsty insect character designed to scare soldiers into taking their anti-malaria pills. It was a harsh artistic pivot from whimsical rhyming cats in silly hats.
