Poison ivy oil can outlive the plant
Urushiol, the invisible toxic oil produced by poison ivy, is horribly stubborn. It doesn't just evaporate or degrade when the plant dies. If you happen to brush a dead vine or handle a jacket that brushed against it an entirely separate season ago, the oil will eagerly transfer right back to your skin to cause a miserable rash. It is pure botanical spite.
