Messier’s ‘do not look’ list became famous

Charles Messier was extremely obsessed with finding comets and hated getting distracted by fuzzy, static objects in the night sky. He created a massive index of nebulas and galaxies purely as a list of annoying things to avoid looking at. Ironically, his spiteful 'do not look' list became his most enduring and celebrated astronomical legacy.
