Most rocks have the decency to sink, but pumice absolutely refuses to comply with basic geological expectations. When certain lavas rapidly cool, they trap so many gas bubbles that the resulting rock is literally light enough to float. Entire floating islands of this volcanic foam can drift across the Pacific for years, acting as chaotic stone rafts that transport coral and marine life to entirely new continents.
