It sounds like a ridiculous fictional name written by a comedian, but it was incredibly real. Canaan Banana served as the very first President of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987. Adding a layer of authoritarian irony, his government allegedly passed a strict law making it a criminal offense for citizens to make jokes about his remarkably fruity last name.
