How a cast becomes an answer
A rune does not carry a sentence that can be read on its own. The reader first assigns significance to its carved mark, then connects that meaning to the question at hand. A symbol associated with a particular theme, for example, may be taken as guidance about a decision involving that theme. The answer is therefore made through interpretation, not simply discovered in the stone.
The role of chance and the reader
The toss supplies an unpredictable result; the meaning comes from the tradition and the person interpreting it. Different readers may emphasize different associations or relate the same symbol to a question in different ways. That flexibility is part of how divination works: the result can prompt someone to examine a concern from an unfamiliar angle, even though it cannot establish what will happen or prove a claim about the world.
Runes also have a history as written characters, but using them for divination is a distinct practice. In a reading, the decisive step is not the stone landing face-up—it is the human act of turning a symbol into a response.
