While the ancient Incas get a lot of credit for their mystical mountain aesthetics, they were mostly just paranoid plumbers. The region gets hammered by relentless rain, meaning the beautiful terraces would have instantly washed down the mountain. They painstakingly spent 60 percent of their entire construction effort on elaborate subsurface drainage that tourists simply walk over today.
