Edgar Degas is beloved for his beautiful paintings of ballet dancers, but his artistic process was deeply invasive. Instead of painting them performing gracefully on stage, he preferred to aggressively hang around their dressing rooms to sketch them scratching their backs or rubbing their agonizingly sore feet. He essentially invented the backstage candid shot.
