Movie castles could be painted on glass

Building a towering gothic fortress is incredibly expensive, so classical studios just painted one on a window. By placing a highly detailed glass painting close to the camera, filmmakers could trick the perspective into merging with the physical set behind it. The imposing villain's lair was essentially just an elaborate doodle hovering near the lens.
