Scissors began with bronze springs

Before the incredibly satisfying pivot design became standard, cutting anything required significant hand strength. Ancient Mesopotamians fashioned the first scissors by connecting two bronze blades with a stiff, C-shaped metal spring at the base. You had to physically squeeze the blades together against the tension, making a simple haircut an absolute nightmare of hand cramps.
