Valkyries historically rode flying wolves in myths

Modern depictions usually show these fierce mythological maidens gracefully descending from the heavens on winged white steeds. However, the original, much more metal runic texts explicitly stated they rode terrifying, bloodthirsty wolves through the sky. Apparently, steering a hovering canine predator was the only acceptable way to gather fallen warriors for the afterlife.
