In 1973, British Rail got tired of delayed trains and decided the logical next step was a nuclear-powered flying saucer. Patent number 1,310,990 outlines a massive passenger vehicle shaped exactly like a UFO, powered by controlled thermonuclear fusion to travel through the air. Sadly, the UK’s national railway couldn't even keep the regular terrestrial trains running on time, so their ambitions for a levitating, radioactive commuter disc were quietly scrapped.
