Evolution had to get immensely creative to stop dangerous venomous snakes from aggressively murdering themselves by accident. The fangs of a pit viper are so absurdly long and sharp that if they were fixed in place, simply closing their mouth would send the teeth piercing straight upward through their own skull. Instead, they possess a hyper-specialized hinge bone that neatly folds the fangs back against the roof of their mouth like toxic switchblades.
