Porcupines turned their hair into weapons

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Instead of inventing a completely new defensive weapon, porcupines simply heavily modified their existing fur coat. Their terrifying quills are literally just heavily thick, stiff hairs firmly coated in dense keratin scales. They easily detach upon contact, completely turning a standard mammalian coat into a deeply unpleasant biological minefield.
