Before moose antlers harden into highly intimidating weapons, they undergo a deeply bizarre fuzzy phase. The growing bone is entirely wrapped in a thick, velvety layer of highly vascularized skin that rapidly pumps nutrients into the structure. Once fully grown, they aggressively scrape it all off, revealing the solid skeletal racks hidden underneath.
