Plato introduced the story of Atlantis in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias around 360 BCE as a fictional allegory to explain the hubris of nations and the superiority of his ideal state; despite the fact that Plato literally made the island up as a philosophical thought experiment, mystics and pseudo-archaeologists have spent centuries trying to locate the sunken utopia using psychic visions, with Ignacious Donnelly resurrecting the myth in the nineteenth century, claiming Atlantis was the origin of all human civilization and ancient magical technologies, meaning people have collectively spent millions of dollars searching the ocean floor for a mystical wonderland that was originally just a metaphor invented by an ancient Greek guy trying to win a political debate
