Why movie characters only use bathrooms to fall apart

Biological functions simply do not exist in screenplays unless they can be leveraged for intense emotional devastation. Bathrooms are never used for simple hygiene; they are designated echo chambers where characters lock themselves in to violently sob, splash cold water on their faces, or dramatically stare at themselves in the mirror.
