Before guys with wooden dummies were doing bad jokes in comedy clubs, they were acting as ancient spiritual mediums. Known as gastromancy, early practitioners would produce noises from their stomachs and claim it was the voices of spirits communicating from the beyond. It took centuries for society to decide this was better suited for children's birthday parties.
