A closer look
Instead of loading hundreds of tiny pictures sequentially, 2D software prefers to swallow one gigantic, highly organized mural. A sprite sheet places every single frame of a character walking, jumping, and attacking onto a single massive file. The engine then rapidly crops and displays specific sections to create the illusion of motion, much like aggressively looking at specific squares of a chaotic quilt through a tiny magnifying glass.
