Aztec artists made shifting-color mosaics from feathers

Paint is completely obsolete when you have a massive supply of tropical birds. Amanteca artisans painstakingly glued and tied thousands of iridescent feathers together to create unbelievably complex shields, headdresses, and tapestries. The resulting artwork actually changed color depending on how the light hit it, creating a holographic effect centuries before anyone knew what a hologram was.
