A closer look
Most shooters give you an endless supply of respawns, but DayZ makes you profoundly terrified of a single stray bullet. This is the psychology of 'gear fear.' When you've spent 15 hours sneaking through zombie-infested rainstorms to scavenge a rusty rifle and a single can of beans, the permadeath mechanic ensures that dying wipes it all away permanently. This utterly transforms player interactions. You don't shoot on sight because you're naturally aggressive; you do it because the sheer anxiety of losing your digital backpack makes you a paranoid sociopath.
