If you wanted to hear a hit song in the 1800s, you literally had to learn how to play it yourself. Before recorded audio existed, the 'music industry' exclusively meant the publishing and selling of sheet music. A song's massive popularity wasn't measured by how many streams or vinyl copies it sold, but by how many families bought the printed notes to clumsily bang out on their parlor pianos on a Tuesday night.
