The Cold War arms race got weird fast. Soviet surgeon Vladimir Demikhov grafted the head and forelegs of a puppy onto the neck of an adult German Shepherd. The horrific chimera could actually drink milk and lived for several days. It was a macabre PR stunt to show Soviet surgical dominance, leaving the rest of the world incredibly disturbed.
