When Arthur Conan Doyle chucked Sherlock Holmes off a waterfall in 1893 because he was sick of writing about him, Londoners literally rioted. Over 20,000 people canceled their magazine subscriptions, and men paraded the streets wearing black mourning armbands until the author was bullied into resurrecting him.
