Water polo players wear special ear guards in the pool

Treading water for an hour while getting kicked beneath the surface isn't brutal enough, so they added a risk of ruptured eardrums. The rigid plastic cups on a player's cap aren't there for aquatic aesthetics; they prevent water and speeding balls from permanently damaging the ear canal. It is less of a swimming cap and more of a localized helmet for the only body part fully exposed to incoming fire.
