How ancient engineers hid rivers underground

When the sun relentlessly vaporizes every drop of surface water, you have to hide your plumbing. Ancient engineers constructed Qanats, gently sloping underground tunnels that safely transported fresh water from mountain aquifers directly to dry plains. By simply moving the river completely out of sight of the brutal sun, they successfully turned arid, uninhabitable dirt into highly functioning agricultural oases.
