When your city has too many hills, public transit stops moving horizontally and starts going straight up. The Santa Justa Lift in Portugal is an ornate iron tower that plucks pedestrians from a lower street and deposits them at a higher plaza. It functions exactly like a normal subway, except it moves strictly on the Y-axis and looks like a gothic villain's lair.
