Instead of demanding a cut of your income, the state simply demanded a cut of your sweat. Through a system known as 'mit'a', citizens were required to spend a portion of the year engaging in hard physical labor for public works. You paid your taxes by carrying heavy rocks, building suspension bridges, or carving mountain roads. It guaranteed exceptional infrastructure while simultaneously exhausting anyone who might complain.
