Styrofoam is mostly trapped air

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

When you buy shipping materials, you are enthusiastically paying for gas. The aggressively squeaky white blocks protecting your new electronics are almost entirely composed of microscopic air bubbles trapped in a thin polystyrene matrix. It is incredibly cheap to manufacture, but hilariously expensive to transport since you are literally shipping a truck full of nothing.
