Shoving a plastic pipe down someone's throat is only step one of life support. To ensure the ventilator air actually goes into the lungs and doesn't just leak back out the mouth, endotracheal tubes feature a tiny balloon at the bottom. Once inflated, it tightly seals the trachea, making vomiting an absolute structural impossibility.
