Early planners for the London Underground wanted to eliminate train doors entirely, proposing continuous, fast-moving conveyor belts that commuters would step onto while the train was still in motion. It was a beautiful utopian dream of efficiency that was instantly scrapped the moment someone imagined an elderly passenger being launched headfirst onto the tracks.
