A closer look
Wales boasts a wooden railway viaduct so precariously positioned that the local wind regularly threatens to yeet locomotives into the sea. The Barmouth Bridge spans the Mawddach estuary, where coastal gales whip up with such ferocity that the Cambrian Coast railway imposes strict wind restrictions. If the anemometers hit certain speeds, train operations are entirely shut down, because nobody wants to explain to an insurance company why a multi-ton passenger train was blown over like an empty beer can by an aggressive sea breeze.
