A closer look
When your primary role in the food chain is 'being eaten by ladybugs,' rapid reproduction is your only defense. Female aphids engage in a terrifying biological process called telescoping generations. During the spring and summer, a female aphid bypasses males entirely to clone herself. She gives live birth to female offspring that already have the developing embryos of the *next* generation growing inside them. They are biological Russian nesting dolls of doom.
