Why computer chips are hitting the size of atoms

Decades of shrinking transistors have finally run into an awkward brick wall: the literal size of an atom. Modern chip features are getting so unfathomably small that they are only a few dozen silicon atoms wide. We are fast approaching the point where shrinking them further would require cutting atoms in half, which usually results in highly undesirable nuclear explosions.
