While audiences were mesmerized by Donald Glover’s exaggerated, hypnotic dancing in the foreground of the This Is America music video, a terrifying amount of symbolic chaos unfolded just out of focus. At the exact 2:13 mark, as the beat switches, a hooded figure riding a white horse trots quietly across the background, closely followed by a police car. It's a blatant biblical reference to Death riding a pale horse, perfectly punishing viewers for ignoring the systemic background violence just to watch a viral dance move.
