A pet monkey was hanged as a French spy
During the Napoleonic Wars, the sheer, blinding panic of the British public led to a spectacularly stupid miscarriage of justice. A shipwreck washed up in Hartlepool holding the sole survivor: a pet monkey dressed in a tiny military uniform. Having never seen a Frenchman or a monkey, the genius locals interrogated the screeching animal, found it guilty of espionage, and hanged it.
