Desperate to convince adults that reading illustrated books was intellectually valid, the publishing industry adopted the term graphic novel. It means absolutely nothing structural. It is simply a psychological marketing tool used to package longer comic stories with a square spine so they can be sold in bookstores for three times the price of a standard issue.
