Why a billiard room was called a “pool” hall
The “pool” in pool hall originally referred to a shared pot of money, not a swimming pool. In a betting pool, several people put stakes together, and the winnings are paid from that combined fund. The word thus carried a gambling meaning before it became closely tied to billiards.
From wagering rooms to a game’s name
Early billiard rooms were associated with group betting. A room where wagers were gathered could be called a poolroom, and billiard tables were part of the setting. Over time, the name stuck to places where people played, even when gambling was not the main activity. The game of pool took its name from the same betting association.
That history leaves a small trace in an everyday name: a pool hall is named for money once pooled around the game, not for water or the shape of the table.
