Half-Life began with Quake's engine
Valve didn't even build their first massive hit from scratch. They licensed the Quake engine from their competitors, ripped out most of the code, duct-taped their own physics and AI systems to it, and called it GoldSrc. That frankenstein engine powered a game that revolutionized first-person storytelling, proving you can definitely copy someone else's homework if you format it better.
