A closer look
When Alexander the Great reached India, he sent his cynical philosopher buddy Onesicritus to chat with the local ascetics, or "naked wise men." Onesicritus later wrote an account claiming these incredibly disciplined sages praised him while trashing conventional Greek philosophy. He also conveniently claimed that the monks told him Alexander was basically a god. His contemporaries immediately called out his fan-fiction, noting that he wildly exaggerated his own importance to secure a book deal.
