In the 1920s, Dr. Henry Cotton convinced the psychiatric world that insanity was merely a side effect of hidden bacterial infections. His brilliant, deeply flawed solution was to amputate patients' teeth, tonsils, and eventually their colons. He boasted a massive 'success' rate that conveniently ignored the fact he was slaughtering almost half his patients directly on the operating table.
