Laika was placed into Sputnik 2 with absolutely zero plans for a return trip. To distract from the fact that they intentionally incinerated a puppy in orbit, Soviet marketing went into overdrive, flooding the globe with stamps, matchboxes, and toys celebrating her as a brave, self-sacrificing hero of the proletariat.
