The Statue of Liberty was once copper-colored
Lady Liberty wasn't always a sickly shade of oxidized mint green. When France gifted the massive monument to the United States, it looked exactly like a gigantic, glowing new penny. Over three decades of exposure to salty sea air and harsh pollution triggered a chemical reaction, completely blanketing the copper exterior in a green patina. So basically, America's greatest symbol is just covered in rust.
