A closer look
Ventriloquism is usually the depressing domain of creepy dolls and bad cruise ship comedy, but Nina Conti weaponized it into brilliant meta-comedy. Instead of telling lame jokes, Conti uses a deadpan, foul-mouthed monkey puppet named Monk to aggressively psychoanalyze her live on stage. She literally uses the medium to mock the absolute absurdity of an adult talking to their own hand, turning a dusty vaudeville gimmick into a raw, existential crisis disguised as stand-up. It's less 'family-friendly puppet show' and more 'paying a therapist who lives in a duffel bag'.
