A severed ear helped start a war between Britain and Spain

Geopolitics used to be intensely petty. In 1731, Spanish coast guards boarded an English smuggling ship and chopped off the ear of Captain Robert Jenkins. Seven years later, Jenkins paraded his pickled ear around British Parliament to stir up anti-Spanish sentiment. It successfully triggered a massive colonial conflict literally dubbed the 'War of Jenkins' Ear'.
