Real men wear skirts directly into heavy artillery fire, a fact the Scottish regiments proudly demonstrated during World War I. Marching into bloody battles in their traditional tartan kilts, these soldiers fought with such terrifying ferocity that the frightened German forces dubbed them the 'Ladies from Hell.' The kilts were eventually phased out, mostly due to the sheer horror of mustard gas on bare legs.
