If reality doesn't match your epic historical narrative, just forge it. Schliemann was an amateur archaeologist desperate to prove the events of the Trojan War were real. When excavating Mycenae in 1876, he discovered a stunning gold death mask and famously telegraphed the King of Greece: 'I have gazed upon the face of Agamemnon.' Modern scholars heavily suspect Schliemann, wanting the mask to look more heroic, hired a goldsmith to weld on an elegant 19th-century handlebar mustache before presenting it.
