Romans thought bees came from rotting bulls
Ancient biology was essentially just terrible guesswork. The Romans subscribed to 'bugonia', a ridiculous concept claiming that if you beat a bull to death and left it to rot in a dark shed, a swarm of honeybees would magically generate from its decaying flesh. Unsurprisingly, this method produced entirely zero honey and a massive public health hazard.
