During the festival of Lemuria, the head of a Roman household had to perform bizarre spiritual pest control. At midnight, he would walk barefoot through the house, spitting black beans over his shoulder without looking back. The logic was that hungry, roaming phantoms would stop to eat the beans, leaving his family peacefully un-haunted.
